A strong B1 (intermediate) general (or higher) entry level is recommended for active participation in learning activities. Per una proficua partecipazione alle attività didattiche è raccomandato un livello di ingresso pari almeno a B1 (intermedio) general “pieno”.


Mission e Programma sintetico / Mission & Content Summary
MISSION

The course aims at providing level B2 (post intermediate) general (see CEFR framework) knowledge and skills required to pass the Bocconi internal exam and/or IELTS Academic. Fornire le conoscenze e competenze previste per il livello B2 (intermedio superiore) general del quadro di riferimento europeo (CEFR) necessarie ai fini sia del superamento dell’esame interno Bocconi sia, eventualmente, del sostenimento del test internazionale IELTS Academic.

PROGRAMMA SINTETICO / CONTENT SUMMARY

The duration of the course is one year (1st and 2nd semester of 1st year) (96 hours + general exam).

 

The course is divided into the following core and wide areas in order to acquire a B2 general level (in terms of grammar, syntax and vocabulary) through contextualized situations:

Brands and branding, Organization, Change, Advertising, Cultures, Employment, Ethics, Leadership, Innovation, Competition.

 

Moreover, part of the course is intended to practice and develop the appropriate skills (writing, reading, listening and speaking) required to successfully sit the IELTS Academic international test.

L’insegnamento è annuale (primo + secondo semestre) del 1° anno (96 ore di didattica + prova generale).

Il programma affronta le seguenti macro-tematiche principali in modo da consentire di raggiungere il livello B2 general (in termini di grammatica, sintassi e vocabolario) attraverso situazioni concrete e contestualizzate:

Brands and branding, Organization, Change, Advertising, Cultures, Employment, Ethics, Leadership, Innovation, Competition.

 

Inoltre parte del programma è dedicata ad esercitazioni che consentano di favorire lo sviluppo delle capacità (writing, reading, listening and speaking) richieste per sostenere con successo il test IELTS Academic.

Knowledge

Students will acquire a good level of knowledge of grammar and syntax as well as a fairly wide vocabulary that will enable them to be independent users of English language and deal with non-familiar and quite complex topics.

Conoscenze

Lo studente avrà acquisito conoscenze grammaticali - sintattiche e un range lessicale di buon livello che consentono autonomia di espressione e comprensione anche relativamente ad argomenti non familiari e di una certa complessità.

B2 Level - (post intermediate) general

Skills

Students will be able to write a clear and detailed text on a wide range of subjects; to understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics; to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; to be clear and detailed when speaking and explain a view point giving the pros and cons of various options.

 

B2 - Livello intermedio superiore general

Capacità di applicare conoscenze

Lo studente sarà in grado di produrre un testo chiaro e dettagliato su un'ampia gamma di argomenti, di comprendere le idee principali di testi articolati su argomenti sia concreti sia astratti. Sarà in grado di interagire con una certa scioltezza e spontaneità che rendono possibile un dialogo naturale con i parlanti nativi senza sforzo per l'interlocutore, esprimendosi in modo chiaro e articolato su molteplici argomenti e riuscirà a spiegare i pro e i contro relativi a varie opzioni.

    STUDENTI FREQUENTANTI E NON FREQUENTANTI / ATTENDING AND NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS

    The assessment method consists of an exam focused on reading, writing, listening and speaking competencies in line with international certifications.

     

    The mark is expressed out of 30.

     

    Student can sit the exam (“general” mode) as from the end of second semester (after the end of the teaching period).

     

    5  exam sessions are scheduled throughout the year (May-Jun, Jun-Jul, Aug-Sept, Oct, Jan-Feb).

     

    The exam consists of two linked parts: written (focused on writing, reading, listening) and oral (final part focused on speaking).

     

     

    Please note that:

     

    •        to sit for the exam, it is required to register via Punto Blu (one single registration, valid for both written and oral part)

     

    •        written and oral part have to be taken in the same exam session

     

    •        the written part is the same for both attending and non attending students

     

    •        final grade: result of the written part + result of the oral part 

     

    •        maximum result of the written part: 27

     

    •        if the result of written part is ≥18, the student is required to sit the oral part (in the same exam session as the written part); withdrawal is not allowed after handing in the written paper as the oral part is just the final step of a single exam (in line with international certifications)

     

    •        students who hand in the written test receive notification (via Agenda yoU@B) about their result and paper view. Students who have passed the writtten exam shall, at a later date, receive details about date, hour and room for the oral part

     

    •        result range for the oral part: min -1 - max +4 

     

    •        if the student is absent at the oral part, or does not interact orally, then they  receive  -3.

     

     

     

     

    Written part

     

    Writing (30 marks), Listening (30 marks), Reading Comprehension (40 marks). Each part is assigned a mark and the sum of these marks is converted into thirtieths to give the grade of the written part.

     

    First part

    Listening

     

    Check candidates’ ability to identify the subject matter and the most important details

    Objective

    in two different listening passages

     

    Skill

    Listening to short talks, presentations or interviews

     

    Sentence completion or gap fills, multiple choice questions or true and false

     

    Test

     

    Total: 30 marks

     

    Second part     Reading comprehension

     

    Objective

    Checking that candidates understand basic grammar and vocabulary in a range of

     

    contexts, including expressions common in business/academic English.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Skill

    Reading and comprehension of authentic or adapted texts

     

     

     

     

    Test

    Multiple choice questions, reading for key information, multiple choice word gaps,

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    suitable word gaps text sentence correction.

     

     

    Total: 40 marks

     

     

     

     

    Third part

    Writing

     

     

     

     

    Objective

    Checking that candidates are able to construct a piece of formal business

     

    correspondence: a letter, a report of between 180-200 words

    Oral part

    Present, explain and discuss the subject of the topic chosen. The ability to answer examiner's and partner's questions

    Presentation skills

    Students are required to prepare a  powerpoint presentation ( max 6 slides) which they will present to a fellow student  and the examiner. As it will be done in pairs, students present to each other in turns.The topic chosen has to be one which has been covered during the course.

    letter, a report  of between 250-280 words

    Students can produce a professional piece of business correspondence: reports or letters
