  • Regressione lineare semplice e multipla. Modelli con variabili esplicative qualitative. Interazioni. Scelta delle variabili rilevanti. Stime e previsioni. Analisi dei residui.
  • Cenni all'analisi della varianza.
  • Studio della dipendenza: variabile dipendente qualitativa. Regressione logistica.

Testi d'esame
  • G. GURIOLI, Introduction to the valuation of investments (translated by G. OSIMO). Notes available online, 2011.
  • A. AGRESTI, B. FINLAY, Statistical Methods for the Social Sciences (fourth edition). Pearson, 2009.

The software used during the course, R, is free and available at http://www.cran.r-project.org/

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide basic mathematical and statistical tools for the analysis of economic and business data. The first part of the course covers evaluation under uncertainty and option pricing. In the second part  basic statistical techniques of data analysis are introduced. The purpose of the course is to provide a solid methodological background and data-analysis skills. In the second part of the course lectures in the computer room are given.

Course Content Summary

Part I. Mathematical tools for data analysis

  • Evaluation with complete and incomplete information.
  • Basic notions of option pricing.

Parte II. Statistical tools for data analysis

  • Data summarization, visualization and management: introduction to the software R.
  • Review of some basic descriptive and inferential statistical concepts.
  • Simple and multiple regression analysis. Models with categorical covariates. Interactions. Variable selection. Residual analysis. Predictions.
  • Introduction to the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
  • Regression models when the response variable is categorical: the logistic regression.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

Written exam held in computer room. Some graded assignments are given during the course. The deadline of their validity is 31-12-2015.
