Obiettivi formativi del corso
Obiettivo del corso è la comprensione del ruolo fondamentale delle istituzioni nella vita economica e sociale. Il corso è organizzato in due blocchi: il primo approfondisce la relazione tra istituzioni, cultura ed economia; il secondo blocco aiuta gli studenti a costruire un progetto di ricerca nell’ambito delle scienze sociali.

Programma sintetico del corso
Primo blocco: Il ruolo delle istituzioni nei sistemi economici
  • Istituzioni formali: sistemi politici, giuridici e regolamentazione
  • Istituzioni informali: capitale sociale, fiducia e senso civico 
  • Istituzioni e sviluppo economico: interazioni tra istituzioni formali e informali, l’endogenità delle istituzioni e la persistenza nel lungo periodo
Seconda parte: Progettazione di una ricerca
  • Esempi di ricerche nelle scienze sociali e per l’analisi delle istituzioni
  • Affiancamento nella preparazione delle proposte di ricerca 
  • Presentazione e discussione delle proposte di ricerca

  • Written exam (70%)
  • Presentation of a research proposal (group-work) (30%)

Non attending students

Non attending students take a written exam on the reading material (70%) and submit and individual research project proposal (30%).

  • Most of the course is based on articles from scientific journals and working papers. A complete and up-to-date list with an indication of the compulsory readings is provided at the beginning of the course.

Course Objectives
The purpose of the course is to enable students to appreciate the role of institutions in economic and social systems. The course is organized into two blocks. The first discusses the relationships between institutions, culture and economic systems. The second block supports students in building a research project for social sciences.

Course Content Summary
First part: The role of institutions in economic systems
  • Formal institutions: political institutions, legal systems and regulations
  • Informal institutions: social capital, trust and civicness 
  • Institutions and economic development: interactions between formal and informal institutions, the endogeneity of institutions, long-term persistence
Second part:Elaboration of a research project for social sciences
  • Examples of research projects in the social sciences and of institutional analyses
  • Supervision in the elaboration of a research proposal 
  • Presentation and discussion of the research project
