Course Objectives
The course aims at analyzing Third Sector world, social business sphere and more generally, civil society and social economy organizations, under a legal, managerial and financial perspective. Nowadays the Third Sector represents an area of growing importance. Internationally speaking, it employs nearly 4% of economically active population, it produces 5% of Western Countries combined GDP and, in Italy, from last Istat census it emerged that the Third Sector includes nearly 300 thousands organizations and that it leverages on the contribution of 4,7 million volunteers, 681 thousands employees, 270 thousands external workers and 5 thousands temporary workers.
The diversified and fast growth of the social economy world, demonstrates that within the actual socio-economic context, the focus is on new entrepreneurial models capable of linking innovation and sustainability, entrepreneurial activity and objective of collective interest. There is clear support that these business models will become a steady point of reference for all the “market” actors willing to generate a positive socio/economic impact.
These few figures justify the need for legal and managerial competencies of professionals involved in non-profit organizations.
Non-profit corporations and diversified expressions of social economy increasingly require legal, strategic and managerial support and they increasingly look for external and specialized advise. Advise is sought, not only during the start-up phase, but also during the drafting of commercial agreements, in the management of relationships with all the stakeholders involved in their own initiatives, in the research of new financing and in relation to subject matters relative to human resource strategies and hiring processes.
Given the fragmented and peculiar structure of the Third sector, consultants operating in this sphere are required to know not only the legal aspects, but also the peculiarities of the managerial processes of the organizations taking part in it. The course responds to these needs, dealing with the most relevant legal themes, the main managerial aspects, the most innovative matters relevant for this sector and related to impact investing and social innovation, also through the analysis of case histories and the projection of video contributions. The course aims at being highly interactive, switching from traditional lectures to case discussions about non-profit governance and strategy; non-profit Italian managers are invited as guest speakers. Students have also to develop some projects related to non-profit organizations. The course offers an international comparative approach.

Oral exam. Students are required to elaborate some projects related to the activity of non-profit organisations.
