    Mission & Content Summary
    MISSION

The course aims to develop students’ conceptual understanding of financial reporting issues and their knowledge of the problems and proposed solutions. It will consider a number of areas where standard setting has proved to be controversial or difficult and where policy debate is continuing. We will examine what theory would suggest regarding practice, how accepted accounting conventions are applied and what actual company behaviour illustrates about the nature of financial reporting. The dominant accounting systems are International GAAP (IFRS) and, at present, US GAAP and we will study the main elements of these systems with a particular focus on the former.

    CONTENT SUMMARY

The course addresses the following issues:

    • The Revised Conceptual Framework of IFRS.
    • The content and accounting principles of IAS-IFRS related to the most recurring and material items, including: revenue recognition, tangible and intangible assets, financial instruments, leasing, provisions and contingent liabilities, and deferred taxes.

    ATTENDING AND NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS

The grade is assigned on the basis of a written exam and a group coursework accounting for 80% and 20% of the total mark, respectively.

Regarding the exams students can choose between:

    • Sitting for two partial exams during the course (second partial exam can be taken only if first partial exam grade is 18 or higher), which are NON cumulative. First and second partial exams account for 30% and 50% of the total mark, respectively.
    • Sitting for a comprehensive exam - which is cumulative – based on all topics covered during the term. The comprehensive exam accounts for 80% of the total mark.

The first partial exam refers to all the topics that are discussed during the first half of the course. Anyway, the exact contents of the partial exams is communicated both via e-learning and during the lessons, once the dates of the exams are definitive and, in any case, with appropriate notice.

The Group Assignment aims at verifying the ability to understand, apply and  crtically evaluate the effects of some Accounting Standards, discussing any potential controversial financial reporting issues and proposed solutions.

The final written exam aims at verifying the understanding of Accounting standards, the ability to apply some rules and to evalute the quality of financial information.

Students belonging to Previous Academic Years
Students belonging to previous academic years who still have to take the exam must study the current academic year program and books. Thus, they have to ask the Secretary’s Office of the Department (see below for the details) to get the access to the current course site to update and integrate their own materials.
