The course introduces basic concepts from inferential statistics. The course has two types of audiences: 1. Students who want to review concepts encountered before but who value having them refreshed and ready more than the time required to attend the prep-course in August. 2. Students who self-assess that they may presenting “gaps” in their background with reference to one or more of the topics/lectures listed below.
1. Random sampling:
Sample statistics and their properties
Location-scale family and their properties
The case of unknown variance: t-Student distribution
2. Modes of convergence and point estimation:
Convergence in probability and weak law of large numbers
Almost sure convergence and strong law of large numbers
Convergence in distribution and the central limit theorem
3. Theory of estimation:
Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE)
Evaluating estimators: MSE, UMVUE, Consistency
4. Hints to the theory and approaches to hypothesis tests.
1. Review the key notions related to Random sampling:
Sample statistics and their properties
Location-scale family and their properties
The case of unknown variance: t-Student distribution
2. Review the key notions related to modes of convergence and point estimation:
Convergence in probability and weak law of large numbers
Almost sure convergence and strong law of large numbers
Convergence in distribution and the central limit theorem
3. Develop a working knowledge of estimation:
Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE)
Evaluating estimators: MSE, UMVUE, Consistency
4. Hints to the theory and approaches to hypothesis testing.
Understand what is a random sample.
Perform point estimation and appreciate the difference between estimation and estimators.
Use the maximum likelihood estimation principle.
Perform hypothesis testing.
