Course Objectives

The main purpose of this course is to complete the mathematical education acquired previously. New tools are provided, whose use is widespread both in Economics and in Management Science, such as integral and probability calculus. The second purpose of the course is to introduce financial calculus and its most relevant applications in practice. The first part of the course is relevant for future applications, while the second one has an immediate professional value.

Course Content Summary
  • Integral calculus: definite integral. Antiderivatives, indefinite integral
  • Integration methods
  • Improper integrals
  • Various approaches to probability
  • Random experiments, Events, Probability, Bayes' Theorem
  • Random numbers, probability distribution and moments expectation and variance
  • Complements on analysis: number series
  • Accumulation and Discount processes
  • Amortization, leasing and instalment sales
  • Standard financial contracts
  • Financial choices
  • Term structure of interest rates and bond arithmetics
  • Financial immunization

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

The exam consists of

  • a written part and an oral one, both compulsory

or

  • two partial exams and an oral compulsory exam.

The written exam lasts one hour and consists in the solution of six questions. Each question gives two points. The written exam is passed if the student correctly answers at least two questions. Access to the ordinary oral exam is reserved to students who have passed the ordinary written exam. The oral exam consists of two questions asked by two different teachers. The answer to each question is evaluated with a number of points ranging from 0 to 10. The final mark is the sum of the points assigned in the ordinary written exam and in the ordinary oral exam. Marks larger than 30 imply honours.
During the course the students have the opportunity to take two partial written exams (1 hour each). Each partial exam enables the student to gather 30 points. The simple average of the two results, rounded up, gives the total mark of the partial written exams. If this total mark is at least 15, the student has the right to take the oral exam only once, by March 2013. The oral exam is compulsory and consists of one general question. The answer is evaluated with a mark ranging from 0 to 32. The final mark is obtained as the simple average of the total mark of the partial written exams and the mark obtained in the oral exam, rounded up. Marks larger than 30 imply honours.

  • Calcolo integrale: integrale definito. Primitive, integrale indefinito.
  • Metodi di integrazione
  • Integrali generalizzati
  • Ottimizzazione classica vincolata
  • Capitalizzazione e attualizzazione
  • Ammortamenti, leasing e rateazioni
  • Contrattualistica finanziaria standard
