This course is an introduction to political science. The course aims at preparing the students for the MSc Politics and Policy Analysis. The lectures cover both seminal contributions, but also recent developments in the research field.
The course contains three parts. The first part examines the academic discipline of political science, the scientific method and the tools of political science. The second part covers topics in comparative politics. The lectures analyze the functioning of democratic and autocratic political systems. Furthermore, the course covers the causes and consequences of electoral systems, the role of institutions in decision-making processes and the evolution of party systems and voting patterns. The third part examines topics in international politics. The course analyzes the main theories of international politics and then applies these approaches to explain war and peace. Furthermore, the lectures examine the problems related to the provision of global public goods and the role of international organizations. In addition, the course focuses on the institutions of the United Nations and the European Union.
