Mission & Content Summary
MISSION

Sustainable development goals, ecological problems such as planetary boundaries and climate change, globalization of supply chains and growing social and ethical conflicts affect business and decision-making processes. Consequently, companies are increasingly required to respond to these challenges developing adequate policies and practices. The seminar aims at providing students with a first understanding of the ethical and strategic implications of corporate responsibility and sustainability. Adopting a strategic perspective, the seminar intends to familiarize participants with the complexity of these decisions, and with the business opportunities resulting from a proper stakeholder management approach.

  • Sustainable development and Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Corporate sustainability.
  • A strategic approach to CSR and sustainability: competitive opportunities, legitimacy and risks.
  • Dealing with complex decisions, dilemmas and trade-offs in CSR and sustainability.
  • CSR and sustainability practices: transforming existing corporations.
  • CSR and sustainability practices: social entrepreneurship and hybrid corporation.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course student will be able to...
  • Define some key concept and theories: CSR, business ethics and stakeholder theory.
  • Illustrate sustainable development and Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Explain what is corporate sustainability.
  • Understand why CSR matters for business and analyze the strategic dimension of CSR.
  • Unravel the linkages between CSR and financial performance, and illustrate the business case for CSR.
  • Illustrate the changes required to build a sustainable company and the hurdles to this transformation.
  • Introduce and discuss concepts such as social entrepreneurship and hybrid corporation.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course student will be able to...
  • Apply the concepts of CSR and corporate sustainability to management through case studies.
  • Evaluate and assess sustainability strategies of some best practices.
  • Analyze the characteristics of a social enterprise through case studies.
