Presentazione generale del corso:

In industrialised countries health care costs absorb almost 10% of GDP. In Italy, the National Health Service directly or indirectly employs about 1,000,000 people. The health care system is a major industrial sector dominated by a difficult balance between competition and regulation. Health care systems are also peculiar as they deal with a primary need (health) and fundamental ethical issues and, from a management perspective, are dominated by highly complex production processes and professional autonomy. The course is intended to expose the students to the overall perspective and conceptual tools required to manage government agencies and health care organizations. The course covers the main management functions and issues that make health care organisations peculiar. Sessions are a mixture of lectures, case presentations, analysis and discussions.


Programma del corso:

The course is divided into three parts:

  • An overview of health care systems and organizations: reasons and scope of government action in health care institutional arrangements and funding systems of health care services in EU and North America major health care reforms in an international perspective types of health-care organisations.
  • A detailed analysis of the main peculiarities of management functions in health-care organisations: organisational structure and behaviour strategic planning management control and marketing.
  • A selection of management and policy issues facing modern health care systems: scientific knowledge in medicine, professional autonomy and accountability quality assurance, quality improvement and accreditation systems implicit and explicit rationing technology assessment contracting arrangements between purchasers and providers.


Testi d'esame:

  • The reading material will be made available by the teachers.


Prove d'esame:

For those students attending classes on a regular basis grading will be based on class participation (20%), a class presentation (20%), a short paper (20%) and a final written or oral examination (40%). Students not attending classes on a regular basis can choose either an oral or a written examination.
