Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the visual arts and to the questions and knowledge that they generate. Looking at a variety of artworks across different periods and media (painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography and cinema, digital arts, video, etc.), and discussing basic issues and challenges posed by artistic research and practice, this course advocates an understanding of the visual arts as a specific way of thinking about the world, knowing reality and acting upon it.

Course Content Summary
This course encourages students to critically investigate a set of key issues, including the status of the image and of representation, the nature of artistic creativity, the significance and implications of critical analysis and interpretation of the visual, particularly in relation to modernity.
The course examines artworks across a variety of media, as well as artists’ writings; and it requires students to engage with a diverse range of secondary literature (historical and critical essays, biographies, literary texts, philosophical essays, etc).
The research and learning aims shared by the four classes may be pursued via different topics and teaching techniques, dependent on the specific expertise and research agenda of individual members of the teaching team.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods
  • Students are assessed via a written and/or oral examination (details are provided by the course lecturer at the beginning of the course).
  • Exam materials include a general handbook of art history, as well as specific reading lists provided by the course lecturer.
  • There are partial exam sessions.
  • Different reading lists and different assessment methods will be specified for attending/non attending students.

  • Detailed reading lists is provided by the course lecturer at the beginning of the course.

Obiettivi formativi del corso

L'obiettivo del corso è quello di offrire allo studente un accesso iniziale alla conoscenza della pittura e delle arti della visione e dello sguardo (arti plastiche, disegno e illustrazione, fotografia e cinema, arte digitale, videoarte, eccetera) intese, nel loro insieme, come campo e sorgente di forme di pensiero, di critica e di azione creativa.

Programma sintetico del corso

L’allievo è introdotto ai temi dello statuto della figura e dell’immagine, alla questione della creatività artistica, ai problemi del pensiero e della ricerca critica nel campo delle arti della visione, muovendosi, in particolare, attorno alla questione della modernità e dei suoi esiti novecenteschi e contemporanei.
I materiali di studio sono costituiti da testi di artisti e di pensatori, da opere d’arte, da saggi critici, storici e biografici, da compendi manualistici di inquadramento generale e da filmati.
Gli obiettivi didattici e di ricerca comuni alle quattro classi possono essere perseguiti con modalità e scelte tematiche differenti a seconda delle competenze specialistiche e dei percorsi individuali di ricerca dei diversi docenti impegnati.

  • L'esame finale, in forma scritta ed eventualmente orale a discrezione dei docenti, fa riferimento a un manuale di inquadramento generale della storia dell'arte integrati da letture più specialistiche.
  • Non sono previste prove parziali.
  • Durante il corso vengono precisate modalità e carichi di lavoro differenziati tra frequentanti e non frequentanti.
