Course Objectives

The course aims at providing students with the tools to solve criminal law matters whose complexity comes particularly from the influence exercised on the domestic criminal law from the European Union criminal provisions and the European Convention on Human Rights.

Course Content Summary

The first part of the course is devoted to the main topics of the criminal law general part arising from the EU and the European Convention on Human Rights and their impact on the domestic criminal law. In the second part of the course, the mentioned topics are deeply analyzed through various topical issues, like the sanctioning in criminal law, international bribery, liability of legal persons, market abuse and money laundering.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods
Written exam. Attending students could be required to carry out both individual or team work.

Textbooks

It is suggested to study some sections of Satzger, International and European Criminal Law, Beck/Hart, Oxford, 2012.
Further details on the course’s cases and materials will be provided via the e-learing platform.

Prerequisites

The course is entirely held in English, but it is not required a native speaker level. The course is actually an opportunity to improve language skills in the legal area. The course, however, aims at encouraging the interaction with teachers and among students as well as teaching a critical approach, rather than verifying language skills.
In order to take effectively part to the course, it is required that any student has previously passed both the criminal law (general part) and international law exams.
