Mission & Content Summary

MISSION

The aim of the preparatory course in Quantitative Methods is to consolidate some topics in pre-undergraduate mathematics which are considered as known and which are not repeated in the University courses. The topics covered by the course will contribute to face basic quantitative aspects in several fields and will help students to study with comfort and competence any further course involving quantitative notions.

CONTENT SUMMARY

  • Summation symbol and properties. Summation properties.
  • Geometric sequence of real numbers. Elementary exponential equations.
  • Real functions of one real variable: general concepts and examples. Graph of a function. Composite and inverse functions. Graphs of elementary functions: constant, linear, affine, power and exponential. Piecewise-defined functions. The maximum and minimum between two functions.
  • Function properties: monotonicity, boundedness and concavity. Maximizers and minimizers of a function. Geometric meaning of a derivative of a function at a point.

  • Graph of a function: domain, behavior at the boundaries, zeros (or x-intercepts), y-intercept, sign, monotonicity, points of maximum and minimum, concavity and convexity.

  • Introduction to financial mathematics. Elementary financial operations. Accumulation and discount problems. Accumulation and discount factors. Symmetric financial operations. Simple interest. Simple interest and floating interest rates. Compound interest. Equivalent interest rates. Compound interest and floating interest rates. Decomposability property.

  • Introduction to annuity. Present value and final value of an annuity.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
