Mission & Content Summary
MISSION
What do art exhibitions, festival, events and movies have in common? They are projects, that implies that creative and cultural organizations are increasingly becoming project-based organizations.
The success of these project is a matter of both technical and organisational issues, hard and soft skills. In fact, project managers are in charge of developing a project plan, understanding the requirements, listing activities and scheduling them. They are also in charge of managing risks and facing the unexpected. Moreover, project managers have to deal with interdependent actors, facing the issues of building the team, fostering creative and problem-solving oriented teamwork.
This course allows students acquiring those project management skills which are critical on creative and cultural projects.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

- Develop an understanding the project management process, acquiring the main logics and discovering the most used techniques.
- Know the principal project management techniques and tools, applied to cultural and creative industries' projects.
- Discuss the challenges of building a project team and managing its dynamics.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course student will be able to...
- Use project management techniques and tools (e.g. WBS, RACI Matrix, Gantt Chart) to plan and execute a project.
- Manage project team dynamics and make creative and problem solving oriented decisions in teams.

- Group assignments
- Interactive class activities on campus/online (role playing, business game, simulation, online forum, instant polls)
DETAILS
- Guest speakers' talks in class: we discuss project challenges with creative organizations.
- Exercises, case studies and interactive class activities: we do exercises to practice PM tools online using softwares and other templates; we discuss cases from cultural and creative projects and we use self assessments about our project leadership styles to reflect on team dynamics.
- Group assignment: we work on a real challenge posed by a cultural institution. The challenge allows to put in practice all the contents seen in class. This assignment is partially done in class during the course, allowing to get intermediate ongoing feedback, and partially outside class. At the end of the course it is presented to the institution.

ATTENDING STUDENTS
- 40% of the grade: written exam (multiple choice and open questions) on all the course materials. This part of the exam is aimed at testing the understanding of project management logics and tools as well as of the main issues that may occur in project teams.
- 60% of the grade: one in-class group project to plan a real project for a real cultural organization. This part of the exam is aimed at testing the ability to use appropriate project management tools and organize the work in team.
NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS
100% written exam on the course’s readings. All the exams are based on multiple choice questions (no penalties for mistakes). The exam is aimed at testing the understanding of project management logics and tools as well as of the main issues that may occur in project teams. It also aims at veryfying the ability to apply project management logics, techniques and tools in project-based contexts.
