Course Objectives

The broad goal of the workshop is to outline challenges and opportunities arising in urban areas and key approaches to urban development and to urban marketing through an interdisciplinary approach. More in detail, students will be able:

  1. To understand the relevance of cities for the management of cultural activities
  2. To explore the potential of urban areas as tourist destinations and to be introduced to the tourism field
  3. To discuss the role of marketing for innovation and value creation in urban centers with a focus on the new smarticity paradigm
  4. To critically understand urban challenges in developed and developing countries
  5. To acquire the skills to operate in multi-faceted, multi-product and multiple-market oriented cities.

Course Content Summary

The workshop will touch upon development and management of recreational and tourism spaces, smart cities, the creative city and cultural policies, key urban issues (re-urbanization and gentrification), new geographies and south world cities.

The workshop combines lectures, case studies, guest speakers, and students’ field projects.
In addition, two field trips allowing students to get in touch with urban design features, the management of relevant urban hubs, and companies leader in the tourism field are planned: a joint visit to Malpensa airport and the Sheraton Milan Malpensa hotel and a joint visit to the Genova old port area and to MSC cruise line.

Prerequisites

This workshop is primarily addressed to ACME students. Other students interested in attending the course as an elective should have a strong interest in tourism, urban and cultural policies and destination management.
