Course Objectives
The course provides the main analytical tools needed to understand the functioning of national and international public policies. After a brief introduction on the relations and main differences between political science and public policy analysis, in the first part the emphasis is on public policy analysis theory and on the various phases of the policy process (such as formulation, adoption, implementation). The second part focuses on a number of area case studies such as the European and USA, where the tools provided in the first part of the course are used in order to understand specific policy evolutions and changes over the past decades.

Course Content Summary
Part I:
  • Political system and public policies.
  • Inside decision making: phases and actors.

Part II:

  • Decision making in the international arena: actorsa and public policies.
  • Decision making and lobbying in the European Union.
  • Politics, public policies and lobbying in Italy.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods
  • Assignment: 30% final grade.
  • Written exam: 70% final grade.

The oral and written presentations will be valid till the end of the 2015-2016 academic year.

No midterm exams are scheduled.
