Course Objectives

More than half of global population lives in cities where various social, economic, cultural, and political functions interact to create a unique urban environment. Moreover, cities are among the fastest growing tourism destinations worldwide. The main objective of the workshop is to stimulate understanding on the vital, and in some cases controversial, relationship between cities, culture, and tourism. Through lectures, case studies and a concrete field project students acquire:

  • A deeper understanding of the growing importance of cities and in particular of the role of cultural assets and creative industries for urban regions.
  • A critical approach to the relationship between cities and tourism and how to make tourism compatible with urban contexts.
  • Methodological skills and practical tools to identify and promote the tourism value of urban sites and cultural resources.

Course Content Summary

  • The global relevance of cities in the contemporary world.
  • The creative city: regeneration and renovation projects through culture and tourism.
  • Key segments: cultural and creative tourism, experiential and lifestyle tourism, event tourism.
  • The impacts of tourism, recreational, and cultural sectors on urban spaces and urban life.
  • Models and issues in urban governance and urban planning.
  • Principles and tools for visitor marketing and management.
During the course, students develop a concrete project in cooperation with and for the UNESCO site Mantova-Sabbioneta (Mantova is also the Italian Capital of Culture 2016). This allows them to see first-hand critical issues in the tourism promotion and management of relevant cultural assets and events while dealing with some of the challenges arising from the UNESCO designation.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

For attending students:
  • Written exam on the course materials for attending students (25%).
  • Discussion of case studies (15%).
  • Group field project (60%).
For non attending students:
  • Written exam evaluation on the course materials for non attending students.
The project is valid until the end of the academic year.
No partial exams are scheduled.

Prerequisites

This workshop is primarily addressed to ACME students. Other students interested in attending the course as an elective should have an interest in tourism, urban and cultural policies, and destination management.
