The overall objective of the course is an improvement in the level of basic knowledge about Information Technology (IT) and a higher level of basic competence in using personal computers and common computer applications.
For this reason Bocconi University decide to give to the students the skills they need to have the European Computer Driving License (ECDL) - START level.
In practice the ECDL certificate indicates that the holder has passed one theoretical test that assesses his or her knowledge on four of the seven tests which assess his or her knowledge of the basic concepts of Information Technology (IT), and the holder's basic competence in using a personal computer and working with common computer applications.


Programma del corso:

The modules of the ECDL Start are the following:

  • Using the Computer and Managing Files, the goal of this module is to teach to the students the knowledge and competence in using the basic functions of a personal computer and its operating system. At the end of this part the students shall be able to operate effectively within the desktop environment. He or she shall be able to manage and organise files and directories/folders and know how to copy, move and delete files and directories/folders. The candidate shall demonstrate the ability to use search features, simple editing tools and print management facilities available within the operating system. (6 hours)
  • Word Processing, in this module the teacher will explain how to use a word processing application on a personal computer. The students shall understand and be able to accomplish basic operations associated with creating, formatting and finishing a word processing document ready for distribution. The students shall demonstrate competence in using some of the more advanced features associated with word processing applications such as creating standard tables, using pictures and images within a document, importing objects and using mail merge tools. (6 hours)
  • Spreadsheets, the goal of this module is to illustrate the basic concepts of spreadsheets and the ability to use a spreadsheet application on a personal computer. The students shall understand and be able to accomplish basic operations associated with developing, formatting and using a spreadsheet. The students shall be able to accomplish standard mathematical and logical operations using basic formulas and functions. The students shall be able to use some of the more advanced features of a spreadsheet application such as importing objects, and creating graphs and charts. (8 hours)
  • Information and Communication, is divided in two sections. The first section, Information, will illustrate how to accomplish basic Web search tasks using a Web browser application, available search engine tools and Usenet, to bookmark search results and to print Web pages and search reports. The second section, Communication, will describe how to use electronic mail software to send and receive messages, to attach documents or files to a message and to organize and manage message folders or directories within electronic mail software. (8 hours).
There will be also 4 hours of seminar on Information System during the course. More information will be published in the Informatics board and communicated in classroom.

Testi d'esame:

The textbooks will be indicated by the teacher on the first day of class.


Prove d'esame:

At the end of every modules the student will be asked to demonstrate what he or she have learnt in classroom. The exams will use a simulated interface of the program used during the lessons and the candidate can choose between Office 97 and Office 2000 software.
The University will pay for the skill card (which is an official record of the tests passed so far ) and the first exam of every modules. If a student failed an exam he or she will be asked to pay for doing it again. The price is Euro 10,33 (equal to L. 20.000) for every exam.
Whenever a student failed an exam or cannot be in classroom the day of the exam he or she will be able to do it in other days of the year. For participating to this exams the student is required to sign for the test.
