To feel comfortable in this course, you should be familiar with the basics of private law and contract law. A basic understanding of the distinction between common and civil law legal systems and the functioning of European institutions is useful.

Mission & Content Summary
MISSION
Intellectual assets protected under intellectual property laws are the results of huge investments in research and development activities, creative processes and goodwill. As a consequence, this course aims at covering first the basics of the main IPRs, namely: patents, trade secret, trademark and copyright, and second the business strategies necessary to manage and exploit firms’ intellectual assets.

- Correctly identify the goals of IP laws to understand how to profitably manage firms’ intellectual asset
- Recognize the subject matter of protection and the scope of IPR protection
- Understand the licensing phenomenon and/or the sharing strategies of IP subject matter
- Recognize in hypothetical cases how intangible assets could be managed
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the course student will be able to...
- Identify opportunities and risks of IP-related management strategies
- Solve hypothetical cases of IPR infringements
- Suggest methods of self-evaluation of business activities
- Demonstrate the ability to orally explain and communicate with appropriate legal vocabulary

As to Guest speakers’ talks, they will be focused on practical issues that IP consultants deal with in every day company life.

As to exercises, during classes students will be required to apply in practice the theoretical principles explained.
