Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to explore the evolution of the global economy over the last 25 years. After 1989, in fact, the World's political and economic mutual destruction equilibrium, in place since the end of the Second World War, transformed deeply, giving place to a much more intricate and complex situation. Confronted with these increasing challenges, managers and policy-makers need to master critical historical perspective and knowledge, and acquire the analytical tools, to understand the changes under way and the new geometries of the global economy. This course aims at providing the basic instruments and skills essential to achieve these objectives.

• A permanent loser? Africa.
• Brazil and the ambiguities of Latin America.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

The final grade will be the outcome of a weighted evaluation of:

1. the student’s class participation (20%)
2. group assignments’ effectiveness and quality (40%)
3. a written exam ascertaining the understanding and knowledge of historical events (40%)

Thomas E.Vadney, The World Since 1945 ,Penguin, 1999 (3 rd edition) for the period after 1945. For the period before 1945, set of slides will be provided by the instructor.
