Course Objectives

The main purpose of this course is to introduce students to basic principles and recent developments in the field of public management. The public sector is a crucial component of the business environment, as an economic actor, in terms of impacts on the private sector and in terms of impacts on society at large. Thereby, this course examines both empirical developments and new theories of public management with an international perspective. Through active participation in this course students gain both the theoretical foundations and the managerial skills needed to understand public sector organizations. The course ultimately enables students to deal effectively with public organizations as individual citizens, as entrepreneurs, as private sector managers, as public sector consultants/suppliers or as managers in public and international organizations.

Detailed Description of Assessment Methods

For attending students
Attending students are expected to attend classes, to participate to our ‘active learning’ and to hand-in the group-work by the deadline. If you qualify as attending student, you can seat the exam for attending students and the evaluation is distributed as follows:
  • Group work (30%)
  • Mid-term (35%)
  • Final exam (35%)
Group work and in-class activities, including incidents and guest speeches, are part of the program for the final exam. By participating to the class activities, you do prepare for the final exam as attending student.

For non attending students
Written exam on the entire text book (all chapters). The text of a previous exam illustrative of the way in which questions are posed is posted on the course web-learning (‘Mock for non attending’).
